Indian shooting icon Abhinav Bindra was honored with the Olympic Order, the highest distinction awarded by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), on Saturday, 10th August 2024. This accolade celebrates Bindra's remarkable contributions to the Olympic Movement, both during his illustrious sporting career and in his subsequent roles.

During the 142nd IOC Session, the committee commended Bindra's unwavering commitment to the principles of Olympism. Bindra, who made history by securing India's first individual Olympic gold medal in the 10m air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Games, expressed deep appreciation for the recognition. "As a young boy, the Olympic rings inspired and guided my life. It was a privilege to chase my Olympic dream for over two decades. After retiring from competition, I've been passionate about giving back to the Olympic Movement. This honor is truly a privilege".

Bindra's Olympic journey spanned five Summer Games over two decades, starting with the Sydney 2000 Olympics. His breakthrough came at the Athens 2004 Games, where he reached the finals of the men's 10m air rifle event, signaling his rise in the sport. His crowning achievement occurred at the Beijing 2008 Games, where he defeated the defending champion, Zhu Qinan of China, to claim the historic gold medal. Bindra continued to compete at the highest level, making the finals once more at the Rio 2016 Games, where he narrowly missed a podium finish, placing fourth.

In addition to his athletic feats, Bindra has played an active role in the Olympic Movement. Since 2018, he has been a member of the IOC Athletes' Commission and currently serves as its vice-chair. In this capacity, he has championed athletes' rights and contributed to shaping the future of the Olympic Games.

Established in 1975, the Olympic Order is a symbol of Bindra's lasting impact on the Olympic Movement, honoring his extraordinary achievements as an athlete and his steadfast dedication to promoting Olympic values.
