New Delhi: India’s patents and industrial filings doubled between 2018 and 2023 while trademarks grew 60% and the country now ranks 6th globally with 64,480 patent filings, up 15.7%, led by resident innovation, the commerce and industry ministry said Monday.India’s IP (intellectual property) office is the second highest globally in trademarks, with 3.2 million registrations in 2023 and the country’s Patent-to-GDP ratio surged to 381 from 144 over the past decade.“A global leader in innovation. India has exhibited a remarkable growth in the patents, designs & trademarks filings according to @WIPO Indicators 2024 report,” commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said in a post on X.“For over a decade now, the Modi government has nurtured a thriving ecosystem for innovation and IP protection. This has not only driven the country's ascent globally, but also fueled opportunities for our startups, entrepreneurs, and researchers,” Goyal said on X.The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) In its annual World Intellectual Property Indicators report last week said that India recorded the fastest growth among the top 20 nations in terms of patents filed and patent filings rose 15.7% in 2023, marking five years of double-digit growth.India ranks 4th globally in trademark filings, up by 6.1% in 2023 with nearly 90% from residents with health, agriculture and clothing being the top sectors. Similarly, India moved up to 10th globally for industrial design filings with a 36.4% increase in 2023, showing significant growth in creative design with textiles & accessories, tools & machines, and health & pharma, together accounting for nearly half of all designs.
