Odisha planning ₹4,000-cr ship recycling hub

The Odisha government will support the development of a ₹4,000-crore ship recycling hub near the Paradip port and plans to establish two new ports in the state with private sector participation, a top official said.The government is also open to investments in setting up railway tracks to aid evacuation of minerals and coal, Hemant Sharma, principal secretary (industry department) of Odisha, told ET.He said hydrogen manufacturing facilities in the state are expected to start production by 2026 end."There will be a major ship building and repair centre jointly with Paradip Port Authority (PPA)," Sharma said.He said the proposed new ports with private participation will come up in Inchuri (North Odisha) and Bahuda (South Odisha), with a capacity of "at least 40 million tonnes each."The government will also encourage development of data centres and global capability centres (GCCs) in the state."We are readying a data centre policy as well as the GCC policy," Sharma said. "We have identified about 250 acres of land south of Bhubaneswar as an electronic city," he added.On rail connectivity in the mineral rich state, he said the state government is open to investing more for completion of crucial projects."The Haridaspur-Paradip railway line is being doubled. We are an equity holder in the special purpose vehicle (SPV) executing this project. If needed, the state has committed to come up with equivalent equity," Sharma said.He also said the current railway corridors are good enough to meet the requirement of the existing coal capacity.
