New Delhi: Tata Group is planning to generate 5,00,000 manufacturing jobs in the next five years, news agency PTI reported on October 15 quoting the group's chairman N Chandrasekaran. The jobs will be in various sectors, including semiconductors, electric vehicles, batteries and related industries, Chandrasekaran was quoted by PTI as saying.Chandrasekaran made the announcement at an Indian Foundation for Quality Management symposium. He emphasised that creating manufacturing jobs is vital for India’s goal of becoming a developed nation. "We cannot achieve the goals of Viksit Bharat if we cannot create manufacturing jobs," he said, noting the increasing number of people entering the workforce.The targeted hiring spree will be driven by Tata Group's investments in various fields. "Between our investments in semiconductors, precision manufacturing, assembly, electric vehicles, batteries, and related industries, I think we will create five lakh manufacturing jobs in the next five years," Chandrasekaran said.The group is establishing new plants, including a semiconductor plant in Assam and other units for electric vehicles and batteries. Chandrasekaran noted that these jobs would have a significant multiplier effect, resulting in the creation of numerous small and medium-sized companies within the ecosystem.Chandrasekaran highlighted the necessity of government support in these initiatives. He also mentioned that modern manufacturing, such as in semiconductors, tends to create multiple indirect jobs for every direct job generated.According to him, to meet the employment needs of the growing workforce, India needs to create 100 million jobs.
