Addressing a rally in the Khanyar area of the city here in support of the NC's Lok Sabha poll candidate Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, Abdullah said, "Modi is trying to create fear among Hindus and to create that fear, he is telling them that your mangalsutras will be taken away and sold to give money to Muslims. Are we such bad people that we will snatch mangalsutras from our mothers and sisters?"
Hitting out at the remarks made by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on comparing situation of Muslims with Jews during the Hitler era, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ajay Alok on Saturday said the Hyderabad MP is fearing his defeat in the Lok Sabha elections and has resorted to making such remarks.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to clarify his stance on removing the 50% reservation limit for scheduled castes (SCs), scheduled tribes (STs), and other backward classes (OBCs). Ramesh emphasised that the Congress manifesto, titled 'Nyay Patra,' pledges to increase the reservation limit, deeming it essential for these communities to fully realize their rights.
Indira Gandhi contested from two seats in 1980 -- Rae Bareli and Medak in Telangana -- and chose to retain the Medak seat. Arun Nehru won the 1980 bypoll and subsequently in 1984. From Arun Nehru, who was late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi's right-hand man, to Sheila Kaul, another Gandhi kin, Rae Bareli returned several of the Gandhi family members and aides to the Lok Sabha. The seat was held by Congress' R P Singh in the 1960 bypoll after the demise of Feroze Gandhi, and by another Congress leader Baij Nath Kureel in 1962.
Sakshi Malik, a former wrestler and Rio Olympics bronze medallist, has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for nominating Karan Singh, son of former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan, as its candidate for the Lok Sabha polls from the Kaiserganj seat in Uttar Pradesh, highlighting the sacrifices made by wrestlers who demanded accountability.
